Planning our gardens and our planting selections are wonderful ways to open our children’s minds about our surroundings. A great first step for their involvement would be container gardening. Your child can choose a few containers, perhaps from your existing collection. If you don’t have pots to choose from, you can let them select a new one. If you are willing to give your kids more space to plant then you could even build a container for your yard or porch.
When choosing what to plant, help your young ones to select season appropriate plants. Seeds are also an inexpensive way to start. Vegetable seeds and herb seeds will produce fairly quick results. All of you parents can relate to how impatient children can be. This will generate excitement and conversation.
Teaching our kids about the benefits of planting and growing gardens is very important. Not only are we helping our environment by growing things in our own backyards, we are helping our bodies too. Growing vegetables and herbs ourselves is a very healthy option for us. We can take this opportunity to teach them about growing organically and avoiding pesticides as much as possible. By growing herbs that can be used in the kitchen, we can teach the kids about healthy eating. It’s been proven that children who get involved in the kitchen and learn interesting ways to cook are more likely to avoid obesity. It’s never too early to instill good eating habits in our families.
If you think your children would prefer to plant flowers as opposed to veggies and herbs, there are still hundreds of options for you. Seeds can be planted as well as annuals. They may even want to select flowers to plant that can be cut and placed in vases around the house. Bringing the beauty inside is also a way to enjoy their hard work.
One thing to keep in mind when planting in containers is that they can be mobile, depending on the size. If you select pots or containers that can be moved then you can let your children experiment even more. They can learn which plants like more sun, less sun, more water or less water. Whether their plants prefer the shade under the eaves of a porch, or whether they like hot afternoon sun. Also consider placing the planters near windows. Being able to see the “fruits” of their labor from inside their home is going to please your children even more.
At Fast Growing Trees Nursery, we strive to promote our most important core value, promoting earth-friendly and eco-responsible ways of life. This is something we believe very strongly in and we feel it should also be instilled in our children. Together we can teach them to take care of their health, the earth and our ecosystem.
