Earlier we touched on “Tools of the Trade”….gardening tools for your kids. The Holidays are approaching. A great gift idea would be some bright colored and fun gardening tools or accessories. We can show our children early on that having the correct equipment makes tending to gardens more fun.

Years ago, when I was younger, I don’t recall having a cool set of mud boots or fun gloves to protect my hands. I still got out in the yard, dug holes, got dirty and planted plenty of things. It was definitely an enjoyable family activity – but my own “tools” sure would have made it extra fun!!

Children’s rakes, shovel, trowels and knee pads, just to name a few, can be found in numerous stores and garden centers and they are sized just right for your kids.

It’s hard to believe that the holidays are nearly here. A gift that would get your child interested in outdoor activities is a healthy alternative to another video game or DVD. Perhaps a children’s book about gardening coupled with a few tools will spark their interest.

Just because it’s cold outside doesn’t mean we can’t plant either. Depending on where you live you may still be able to plant evergreens and some annuals. Planning for spring is also a fun family centered activity. How about plotting a vegetable garden or planning how to add more color to your landscape? Empower your children by letting them make choices about their surroundings.

Just remember, it’s always good to teach our children that in life and gardening “we reap what we sow”.
